Daylight Saving Time 2027: When Do Clocks Change?

·7 min čtení

Daylight Saving Time (DST) is the practice of advancing clocks by one hour during warmer months to extend evening daylight. In 2027, billions of people around the world will adjust their clocks twice — once in spring (forward) and once in fall (back). Here's everything you need to know about DST changes in 2027.

When Do Clocks Spring Forward in 2027?

United States & Canada

  • Spring forward: Sunday, March 8, 2027 at 2:00 AM → 3:00 AM
  • Fall back: Sunday, November 1, 2027 at 2:00 AM → 1:00 AM
  • Most of the US and Canada observe DST, except:

  • Arizona (except the Navajo Nation)
  • Hawaii
  • Most of Saskatchewan
  • Parts of British Columbia, Nunavut, and Ontario
  • European Union

  • Spring forward: Sunday, March 29, 2027 at 1:00 UTC → 2:00 UTC
  • Fall back: Sunday, October 25, 2027 at 1:00 UTC → 0:00 UTC
  • The EU has debated ending DST permanently, but as of 2026, the twice-yearly clock change continues across all member states.

    Australia

  • Spring forward: Sunday, October 4, 2027 at 2:00 AM → 3:00 AM
  • Fall back: Sunday, April 4, 2027 at 3:00 AM → 2:00 AM
  • Only observed in: NSW, VIC, ACT, SA, and TAS. Queensland, Western Australia, and the Northern Territory do not observe DST.

    Countries That Don't Observe DST

Most of Asia, Africa, and South America do not observe DST:

  • China — uses a single timezone (UTC+8) year-round
  • Japan — abolished DST in 1951
  • India — never adopted DST
  • Brazil — abolished DST in 2019
  • Russia — permanent standard time since 2014
  • Why Does DST Exist?

The original idea was to save energy by making better use of natural daylight. Benjamin Franklin first suggested the concept in 1784, but it wasn't widely adopted until World War I, when Germany implemented it in 1916 to conserve coal.

Modern research on whether DST actually saves energy is mixed. Some studies show minimal energy savings, while others suggest it may even increase energy use due to heating in the morning and cooling in the evening.

    The Debate Over DST

DST is increasingly controversial. Critics argue that:

  • The biannual clock changes disrupt sleep patterns and health
  • Studies show increased heart attacks and traffic accidents in the days following spring forward
  • The energy savings are negligible
  • It creates confusion for international scheduling
  • Some US states have passed laws to adopt permanent DST, but federal approval is still pending. The EU has voted to end DST but hasn't implemented the change.

How to Prepare for DST Changes

  • Gradually adjust your sleep schedule by 15 minutes per day in the week before the change
  • Use timezone-aware tools like WorldTimezone that automatically handle DST transitions
  • Double-check meeting times around DST transition dates
  • Be extra cautious driving on the Monday after spring forward — studies show increased accident rates
